What is Anger?

The survival instinct - attempting to protect you.  It's part of the 'fight-flight-freeze and f**k' response.

Your brain:

  • stores memories (hippocampus) and pattern matches to previous events.

  • fires up the alarm system (amygdala) ready for action

  • blocks the reasoning (cortex) and jumps to conclusions "It's all or nothing!"

What happens?

  • Adrenalin surges into the blood stream - preparing the body for action

  • Cortisol increases - to help focussing

  • Testosterone increases - to increase aggression

  • Breathing quickens - pumping more oxygen into the blood

  • Blood pressure goes up - to move blood away from vital organs into the limbs ready for fighting or fleeing

What causes it?

  • Overtiredness

  • Hunger

  • Cravings

  • Addictions

  • Hormonal changes

  • Pain

  • Ill/health

  • Alcohol

  • Sexual frustration

What are the Myths?

  • "Better to let it out." - whatever you practice, you get skilled at

  • "Suppress it, and you'll get depressed." - depressed people are already angry people

  • "Men express more anger than women." - men are more likely to demonstrate physical anger, women more verbal anger

  • "You hold onto anger from childhood." - dreams de-activate unexpressed emotions.

How does anger make you think?

  • Jump to conclusions: "They did that deliberately!"

  • Blaming others: "Now look what you made me do!"

  • Sweeping generalisations: "Everyone's got it in for me!"

  • Exaggerating reactions: "If you do that, I'll kill you!"

  • Taking a position: "It's my way or the highway!"
