Book Review: Carnosine - The Miraculous Anti-Ageing Supplement

January 2006

"over and over again, nature comes up with chemical masterpieces that are deceptively simple but have an astonishing variety of benefits.  Carnosine is one of them!"

Perhaps I'm biased, but this book really gets my juices flowing where anti-ageing is concerned.  Dr Marios Kyriazis has a long list of credits after his name, so not surprisingly he is a pioneer in the field of anti-ageing medicine.  His book "The Elixirs of Youth" unearths the hidden implications about ageing and how we can possibly escape it - and, more importantly, the illnesses it brings with it - through the one simple chemical - Carnosine.

Dr Kyriazis explains that since the year 1900, when Carnosine was discovered in a Russian laboratory, the supplement has been researched about as many times as the whole world eats hot dinners.

Dr Kyriazis' book goes into great detail - without any psychobabble about the ingredients of Carnosine and how it has been found to scientifically help us all benefit.  In a nutshell, he points out that studies on Carnosine have shown that the substance is a step in the right direction towards helping age-related degradation of the body’s proteins and that Carnosine is the most effective anti-carbonylation agent yet discovered - in plain English, this means it effectively quenches the most destructive of free radicals.  It also has the remarkable ability to actually rejuvenate cells approaching the end of their life cycle, thereby helping to restore normal appearance and extending lifespan.  Because of this amazing ability to rejuvenate tissue cells it has a wonderful effect of speeding up wound healing and, most importantly, protects the microvas culature of the brain from plaque formation that seems to lead to senility and Alzheimer’s disease.

He says that Carnosine can be found mostly in the breast of chicken, duck and turkey meat, while it is also in the legs of rabbit and beef, saying that Carnosine is more concentrated in the breast of the bird because that muscle is "more useful during flight than the thigh of red meat".  He also goes onto say that "men have more of a concentration of Carnosine in their muscles than women, as they are [biologically] supposed to be stronger and run faster".

Several scientists and doctors have expressed their concern about the effects of Carnosine on the body when bearing in mind the body's process of breaking down Carnosine encourages histidine to be released - which is then liable to be chemically transformed into histamine.  This is the chemical that causes the concern because, as those who suffer with allergies know this is what causes them.  In defence of Carnosine, Dr Kyriazis states that "moderation and balance are the key words", particularly as histamine is necessary to protect you during stress and therefore has an added benefit because: "Carnosine, far from causing toxicity of histamine, turns out to be a useful agent which can reduce the effects of stress".  He then says "When too much histamine is produced, Carnosine immediately comes to the rescue and blocks the histamine receptors."  Additionally, Carnosine appears to be an allergy-fighter which reduces, or even blocks, skin allergies.

His book touches on some very interesting subjects about the benefits that Carnosine offers - a couple are that his research has found that it acts as a heavy metal chelator (binding to copper and aluminium and a few others) while he also goes into great detail about its antioxidant job too (that means it seems to prevents free-radical damage, i.e. stopping cells from becoming like balloons with holes in them).

There have been many clinical trials on the effects of Carnosine and Dr Kyriazis highlights these in Chapter 3.  Surprisingly, Dr Kyruazis was the scientist to put Carnosine to trial in a human experiment to find the effects of anti-ageing.  And this was in the summer of 1999. From his own research, patients reported "improved clarity of thought", "normal sleep patterns" "improved joints and agility", "improved muscle tone", "heightened libido", and "improved sense of smell".  He even mentions that Carnosine has been used to treat different illnesses like arthritis and bone health, high blood pressure, blood clotting, ulcers, wounds and skin health and even, heaven forbid, cancer.  Many of his results he claims have offered short-term and long-term improvements.

While on the topic of cancer, Dr Kyriazis says that "cancer cells increase sugar production because they need the chemical energy from the sugar in order to survive.  Carnosine blocks this by reducing sugar availability, and therefore it has the potential to starve cancer cells to death, by blocking their energy supply."

Interestingly, he explains in great detail the benefits of Carnosine to the health of our eyes and that it has the ability to "treat cataracts."  Many people, he says, are given a course of antioxidants to try to prevent further impairment to the eyes, but, he says "this does nothing to reverse an already existing cataract".  Some things that speed up the formation of cataracts are radiation from the sun, mobile phones, computer and television screens - although there doesn't seem to be any agreement between scientists on the subject of mobile phones affecting eyes the way Dr Kyriazis thinks they do.  "However," he says, "because Carnosine is active against so many different processes, it is being used to help deal with the problem caused by cataract.  For instance, several experiments with dogs suffering from age-related cataract have shown the positive effects of Carnosine in improving the condition.  Note that I said 'improving' and not merely 'preventing'.  Improving means that the damage was already done and the Carnosine has repaired it, by reversing it."

Dr Kyriazis suggests that people who ideally should perhaps supplement with Carnosine are those who want anti-ageing protection, those who want to prevent dis-eases such as cancer, muscle weakness, heart disease, diabetes and dementia as well as those who have existing ulcers, diabetic complications and cataracts.  He suggests that "over and over again, nature comes up with chemical masterpieces that are deceptively simple but have an astonishing variety of benefits.  Carnosine is one of them," and that it "should be taken ideally with Co-enzyme Q10 (Carnosine's mighty ally) and Vitamin E" for best protection.

And if you are worried about side-effects, Dr Kyriazis appears to have found none and that none have yet been recorded - except when using very high dosage then muscle trembling begins.  There's also another downside, in that immediate short-term effects are not obvious, as you need to take it for a couple of weeks or a couple of months for the dis-eases mentioned above before you see any possible results, but anti-ageing will obviously take a little longer.

Although this book is chiefly about Carnosine, he goes on to quote that CoQ10 offers great protection for the eyes as well as the brain and gums.  "The benefits of CoQ10 in limiting brain damage after the oxygen supply [as in stroke] is cut off are well known."  He also says that in unconfirmed experiments, CoQ10 may be effective in reducing the advance of cancers, such as those of the prostate and breast.  The concentration of CoQ10 in the blood of people suffering from prostate or breast cancer is low anyway, but giving high doses of CoQ10 seems to reduce some of the effects of these cancers.

Overall, I consider this a 'best find' book on complementary medicine by a world renowned doctor and scientist.  It openly discusses the benefits of a naturally occurring chemical and explores the reasons behind its success without hiding any of the side-effects that might (if ever) arise.  Although, I cannot vouch 100% for his findings in cancer research!
