Raoul Moat - RIP
Sadly, this one man's actions have shown us
all what the UK is heading towards.
Thousands of people have paid 'tribute' to a
man they hardly know. A man who beats his dog to a pulp, frightens the
children and shoots people who get him angry. But this is only
scratching the surface.
Why? George Galloway seems to have
gotten one message from this incident. He said:
"I think it is a cry from the heart from poor, white, working
class, unemployed people who are drifting on to dangerous shores.
They hate the government, they hate the police, they hate society and
feel left behind."
Many times, Mr Moat asked for help. The
papers lead us to believe he was a police informant. If so, why did they
not put him in touch with Social Services and on a path back to possible a
normality that he could find satisfactory? But, given their track record
with children's care, can the Social Services be trusted to do the right thing?
What is the right thing? To do a job and
get commended for it? Can we learn the lessons that this man's actions in
life and repercussions in death have exposed to us? Or do we simply get
angry and ignore the message here?
We need change. This government is
bringing that about. But it needs to be handled properly. Not by
those who like to trump their own bugal, but by those who really know how to do
a good job - for the right reasons.
A quote is brought to mind: "Do unto others as
you would have them do unto you." Mr Moat's actions have proved this to be
wrong. Perhaps, instead, we should:
"Do unto others as they would have us do unto
them."
We all have a set of basic emotional needs to
satisfy.
-
Security, safety in an environment that can
allow us to grow.
-
Attention - to give and to receive
-
Control - over our own lives
-
Emotional connection to others
-
Community acceptance
-
Status within that community, amongst
family, friends and colleagues
-
Achievement and competence
-
Meaning and purpose in live - being able to
learn and think about what we want from life
If any one of them is missing, we appear to
feel a failure in some way or another.
Perhaps it's time to ensure that we know what
these needs are. If not, there can be only losers in this game - it's up
to us all to take a stance and do what is right.
